Farmers watching harvest costs have another federal program to follow, though the details needed to calculate a payment are still coming.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced $8 billion in nationwide Harvest Fuel Relief on October 19. The Farm Service Agency will administer one-time payments intended to cover part of modeled losses for the 2026 crop year.

USDA says the formula will use reported planted acres and federal estimates of production costs, yields and prices. The national announcement does not establish an award for any particular La Porte City or Dysart-area farm.

Payment rates for Title I commodities are due in November. USDA says the method for other eligible commodities will be announced later. The October 19 release did not set an application window.

Producers can prepare by creating a Login.gov account linked to USDA; the agency says that connection will allow access to prefilled applications when the application period is announced.

USDA says crop-insurance participation will not be required for Harvest Fuel Relief. Farmers should watch official USDA and FSA updates for rates, eligibility details and signup instructions.
